Exercise Your Leadership

Did you know, if current trends continue, that Americans will soon be spending as much time at their jobs as workers did in the 1920's? In fact, we have steadily increased the number of hours we spend on work-related activities for the past few decades. It's no wonder that people are squeezing work phone calls in on their commute home or answering a "quick" email at the dinner hour. As a coach I often hear, "Where am I going to find the time to work on my own development?"

Here's a suggestion that fits into this busy pace: a 5-Minute Leadership Workout.

Take 5 minutes a day, just 300 seconds, to evaluate the task you just completed and this reflection will help you move to a higher level of leadership.

  1. Ask yourself these questions:
    • What did you do?
    • How did you do it?
    • How could you have done it differently?
    • What were the consequences of your actions?
    • How did you feel about your choices, decisions, and or actions?
  2. Reflect on the questions.
  3. Talk it over with a coach, friend or colleague.
  4. Decide on a new course of action the next time the situation presents itself (if needed).
We are literally working 24/7 with global competition and technology driving this pace. We have to find time to grow our careers, nurture our relationships, take care of ourselves and the list goes on and on. By spending literally five minutes on leadership development you will see your skills improve. So why not try a 5-Minute Leadership Workout-you don't even need to go to the gym!
